early baby survival rate premature babies born at 22-24 weeks

did you know 60,000 babies are born premature each year in the uk alone.

A few years ago my cousin was born early at 23 weeks and it was a struggle to get a relative to follow the consultant around to try fight for this premature baby. As babies were only classed as viable at 24 weeks many hospital’s policies varied as if they continue giving support to keep these babies alive.

premature babies have been known to survive from as early as 22 weeks now compared to 10 years ago.

recently news headlines stated that an artificial womb is being developed that works for lambs  and will be intended for use with early human babies soon. These scientists tested the setup for up to four weeks on eight fetal lambs that were 105 to 120 days into pregnancy — about equivalent to human infants at 22 to 24 weeks of gestation. After the four weeks were up, they were switched onto a regular ventilator like a premature baby in a NICU.  so who knows in the next few years what gestational age of baby can be saved from such new developments in technology.

National statistics from 2011 show about 30 per cent of babies born at 23 weeks survived. But Dr Ward Platt said he had known two babies born at 22 weeks to survive while about 60 per cent of babies born at 23 weeks at his hospital over the past six years lived.survival rates of very premature babies increased from 53% in 2006 to 80% in 2011.

Now more hospitals are more empowered to fight for premature babies born this early, it truly is a miracle.
